Patrimonio Mundial (World Heritage Sites)
La declaración de bienes como Patrimonio Mundial es un reconocimiento que otorga la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) a los sitios que poseen un "Valor Universal Excepcional". Por medio de esta distinción se califican estos bienes como "universales", y su disfrute, protección y cuidado pasa a ser reconocido por todos los pueblos del mundo, independientemente del territorio en el que estén localizados.
Entre los cometidos que tiene la UNESCO está promover la identificación, la protección y la preservación del patrimonio cultural y natural de todo el mundo considerado especialmente valioso para la Humanidad.
Con este objetivo surge la idea de redactar un tratado de carácter internacional que cristalizó en la Convención sobre la Protección del Patrimonio Mundial, Cultural y Natural, aprobado por la UNESCO en 1972. Hasta ahora 193 países han ratificado este documento, lo cual implica una aceptación casi universal. Estos países reconocen así que los sitios localizados en su territorio e inscritos en la Lista de Patrimonio Mundial, sin perjuicio de la soberanía o la propiedad nacionales, constituyen un patrimonio universal en cuya protección y salvaguarda la comunidad internacional entera tiene el deber de cooperar.
Gracias a esta Convención se ha podido proteger sitios con valor cultural o natural que se hubieran deteriorado o desaparecido debido a la falta de recursos para preservarlos.
Las Pirámides de Egipto, la Gran Muralla China, los canales de Venecia, las cataratas de Iguazú,… son ejemplo, entre muchos otros, de los 1.154 bienes declarados Patrimonio Mundial que están distribuidos en 167 países. España, con 49 bienes, está a la cabeza entre los países con más sitios inscritos en la Lista de Patrimonio Mundial.
Estos bienes se dividen en tres categorías, en función de sus características: bienes culturales, bienes naturales y bienes mixtos (estos últimos poseen valores tanto culturales como naturales).
En la actualidad hay declarados 897 bienes culturales, 218 naturales y 39 mixtos.

- 142 WHS (World Heritage Sites).
- 58 WHS en la "lista tentativa" (es el inventario de propiedades que cada país pretende que sean consideradas para su futura nominación como WHS).

Lista Indicativa
La Lista Indicativa ("Tentative List") es el inventario de aquellas propiedades que cada Estado Parte pretende considerar para su nominación como WHS.
Se alienta a los Estados Partes a presentar en sus Listas Indicativas los bienes que consideren patrimonio cultural y/o natural de valor universal excepcional y, por tanto, aptos para su inscripción en la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial.
Se alienta a los Estados Partes a preparar sus Listas Indicativas con la participación de una amplia variedad de partes interesadas, incluidos administradores de sitios, gobiernos locales y regionales, comunidades locales, ONG y otras partes y socios interesados.
Los Estados Partes deben presentar Listas Indicativas, que no deben considerarse exhaustivas, al Centro del Patrimonio Mundial, al menos un año antes de la presentación de cualquier nominación. Se alienta a los Estados Partes a reexaminar y presentar nuevamente su Lista Indicativa al menos cada diez años.
No se considerarán nominaciones para la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial a menos que el bien nominado ya haya sido incluido en la "Lista Indicativa o Tentativa" del Estado Parte.
